OK so you’ve written a catchy little tune or riff and now you want to turn that into a great song right? You’ve maybe even come up with a melody for a singing line for the verse or chorus and it’s coming together nicely:) So, you grab your pen and a pad, snap open a beer or glass of wine (coz that always helps) and you’re ready to knock out some great lyrics and you’re thinking to yourself, THIS IS THE EASY PART. All I need is something to write about and I’ll be underway. A little bit of pen chewing follows with a little bit of staring blankly into space…how long can this take? 10 minutes, half hour…come on, an hour at tops!

So the next drink goes down, the pen gets another chew, more staring into space and still nothing to show. “OK, maybe I’m just not in lyric mode today after all” you think to yourself. “I’ll try again tomorrow.” We’ve all been there and this is generally what’s known as writers block. I once went a whole 2 week vacation with writers block. Got through plenty of coffee in those couple of weeks:)

Some would say that it’s not possible to learn songwriting, that you can either write songs and lyrics or you can’t. Well I disagree with this because I have learned over a short period of time some simple techniques that help with songwriting. Yes, some people are just natural writers and find it easy and are just very creative, but that’s not to say that anyone, given some simple methods can write great songs. If these techniques are put into practice then song writing becomes much easier.

Here are some easy ways to get around writers block:

*Keep The message simple and try to write words that connect with people* *Try to avoid cliches but don’t get too hung up about this. A good song can have cliches* *Don’t think that everything has to rhyme. Making the lyrics singable is more important than rhyming* *Tell a story in the past tense. Writing about something that has already happened is much easier to tell a story about.* *Write about something that is happening right now. Maybe that is happening to you, a friend or a family member* *Write about something that might happen in the future. What would you do if you came into money, or if your partner cheats on you. Write about the outcome of a situation*

That should give you plenty to go on to get you started. Don’t forget, practicing makes a big difference.

The Right Fit No Matter the Age
It does not matter if this pick will be used by someone who is six-years old or sixty-years old, the Planet Waves Standard guitar pick will be just what the doctor ordered. The pearl finish is attractive enough for kids to want to use, thick enough not to snap when used on electric guitars, and thin enough not to muddle the sound of the strings.

Why a Medium Guitar Pick?
A medium guitar pick is 0.73–0.81 mm or 0.028–0.031 inches thick. When playing rock or heavier music, or while playing electric guitar with hi-gain amplification or distortion, thinner picks produce muddier, less precise, less controlled sound while thicker picks produce more specific, more controlled and well-shaped tone. Thinner picks also tend to rip or tear more often if used too forcefully, whereas a thicker one is less likely to wear down. Thicker picks are generally used in more discrete genres, such as heavy metal or power metal.

Comes in a 10-pack of assorted pearlized colors.

Celluloid, Historically Speaking
Invented in 1856, celluloid is considered the first invented thermoplastic. This was the first plastic ever used to produce picks, and it is still used today--especially for guitarists aiming for vintage tone. Celluloid is easily molded and shaped, and it was first widely used as an ivory replacement. Easy to manufacture, easy to produce, celluloid is the favored pick of guitarists around the world.
